WHAT IS THE PORTLAND SEAFARERS MISSION?

The Portland Seafarers Mission is a non-profit organization. Its primary purpose is to provide services to the seafarers who come into the area without partiality of race, religion, economic or social condition.

Dear friends of the Seafarers:

The Portland Seafarers Mission sends to you our hopes that this new year will be one of peace and celebration for you.

     As 2007 starts we want to tell you how 2006 went for this ministry to the seafarers who serve as crew aboard the hundreds of ships that dock in Portland each year. Last year over 800 ships and about 16,500 crew members were our guests in Portland.

      We wish we could tell you we were able to greet every ship and to personally welcome and serve all the 16.500 seafarers.

     We did manage to visit and serve about two-third the number of ships that docked in 2006, about 530 ships and almost 10,650 seafarers.

     The Portland Seafarers Mission has no paid staff. It is made up of volunteers representing several nationalities and a number of Christian denominations. It just has not found enough volunteers willing to devote some time to visiting the ships and serving the sailors through transportation to shopping malls, churches and other places of interest, giving them free use of cell phones, internet access on board and more.

     The Portland Seafarers Mission is also in need of funds. The maintenance of van, insurances, repairs, monthly charges for cell phones and for wireless internet access on board for the seafarers, and other monthly expenses all cost money. Remember, this Mission is a non-profit organization and all your donations are tax-deductible.

     Volunteers and money are needed. But the Mission needs also your prayers. Without God’s Spirit working through this Mission and the volunteers we would not be able to serve.

     Thank you for anything you can do to help this Mission serve persons far from their homes and loved ones. Join us in making the sojourners welcome in our land!
